I am guessing you are asking for yourself. Only you can really know the answer to that question. I would encourage it b/c you would be able to call the shots and make a great deal more as an consultant.
Consulting work is not easy. You’ll need all the help you can get. I recommend the book The Trusted Advisor, by David Maister.
Many technical professionals, project managers, etc. cannot survive in consulting because they fail to learn the skills of true-blue consultants, who are really advisors and providers of strategic advice, not implementors.
